About

Ruby is a multidiscipinary artist and arts facilitator, working primarily in sculpture, installation, and performance. Their work is socially and environmentally engaged, focused outside conventional gallery spaces, connecting to the land, people, and communities. They graduated with a first in Fine Art BA from University of Brighton in 2024 and have since worked as a freelance workshop facilitator with Towner Gallery in Eastbourne.

I approach my art practice as spiritual practice and social/community practice. My work is sculptural and process/performance based and I do a lot of workshops and communal artwork as part of my practice. I explore the use of storytelling to reshape our relationship with the world around us, particularly the natural environment, and encourage sharing information through community intimacies, reconnecting to oral tradition and a language of symbols often in opposition to dominant powers of the time in history. The use of puppetry and less formal performance practices to tell stories in a way that engages our human tendency to be drawn to what is moving, changing, and alive in front of us. I engage with objects and artefacts to question conventional hierarchies of usefulness, embracing materials subject to change and decay over time in order to reconnect with natural cycles, in opposition to modern consumerism. I explore the body, opening it, surrendering it, and questioning the boundaries between flesh and the world around us, between self and other. As my practice develops, I am tending towards making art not intended for conventional gallery spaces, rather artworks offered as gifts to places, people, and communities. These artworks continue to live and change in interaction with dynamic environments, and grow deeper meaning through the intimacy of their given home. This practice helps rebel against the commercialisation and depersonalisation of public spaces, making artworks that are not to be bought or sold within them but offered with open palms. “
